WA Fire & Rescue – SET (SM02/ST02)

Service – Fire & Rescue Service of WA
Appliance type – Specialised Equipment Tender
Fleet number – SM02/ST02
Cab Chassis – Scania
Body Builder –
Registration – 1QAM234
Stationed at Osborne Park

The Specialised Equipment Tender is designed to provide additional specialist equipment to supplement the equipment carried on pumper appliances. The role is typical of those fulfilled by a Hazmat or Breathing Apparatus support appliance in other services. Indeed the most common response for these appliances is to support urban incidents with Breathing Apparatus resources including spare cylinders and servicing.

This current model is a semi-detachable unit, based on a Scania cab-chassis with a rear body module which can be removed for servicing or transfer of the module to another vehicle if necessary. Note that this varies from the POD concept where the module is delivered on a slide on-slide off transporter system.

A large retractable awning on the kerbside provides shelter for operations and a ramp at the rear provides a loading/unloading point for equipment in addition to a door on the side. Some equipment is stored in external lockers, such as spare BA cylinders, with most equipment stored in racking inside the rear module. At the front of the rear module is a small command & control area equipped with communications equipment and workstations for management of incidents.

SM02/ST02 was a replacement for the original SET stationed at Osborne Park. It’s an identical appliance to Murdoch’s SET. Osborne Park SET mainly services the north of Perth with Murdoch’s covering south.

SM01/ST01 was an incremental appliance brought online at the new Murdoch Fire Station, providing a resource south of the river. This reduced the reliance on the existing SET, stationed at Perth and then Osborne Park Stations, and allows that resource to focus more of the north of Perth.

Bush Fire Service WA – Kalamunda Brigade

Bush Fire Service WA
Kalamunda Brigade
Kalamunda Shire

Kalamunda BFB is the only BFS Brigade in the Kalamunda Shire and the station is located in the Walliston industrial area. The brigade has centralised over many years as much of the Shire has been urbanised with decreased bushland and FRS resources increased. The Walliston station is the first formal fire station for the brigade, with previous operations running from a shed at the rear of the Police Station and Bus depot in the Kalamunda town centre. Prior to that shed, operations were spread across informal ‘homes’ for the brigade’s equipment. An extensive history can be found on the brigade’s website (link below).

The brigade’s fleet has developed strongly over the years. A core part of the fleet has always been a number of Light Tankers (or Fast Attacks as they were also known). The brigade still runs a number of Light Tankers, but has increasingly moved towards larger tankers with greater water capacity and equipment stowage. The brigade these days has a 3.4 tanker, 2.4 tanker, and 1.4 tanker along with a number of Light Tankers. Some years ago the Brigade also commissioned an Incident Control Vehicle, based on a Toyota Coaster bus, which has increased the Command & Control capabilities in the shire.

Helitack 671. Helicopters Australia (CHC) VH-WCX.

Helitack 671 is operated by Helicopters Australian which is part of HNZ Global, a subsidiary of CHC Helicopters.

Helicopters Australia run this set of Helitacks in both Qld and WA, with the Qld fire season running earlier. The Helicopters run with the same callsigns in both states, and have a few decals changed between Qld Fire & Rescue for Qld operations, and Dept Fire & Emergency Services and Fire & Rescue WA for their season.

In WA, they run from Helicopters Australia’s Perth Airport facility.

The image below captures bombing operations at a fire in the Zig Zag Regional Park, overlooking Perth Airport and the city.
